“Improvement of Temporomandibular Disorders through Chiropractic Therapy”

Temporomandibular disorders are caused by cranial distortions

Many patients, even if they have not been officially diagnosed with temporomandibular disorder, suffer from its symptoms. Distortions of the bone structure cause distortions in the skull, itself composed of fifteen different types of a total of twenty-three cranial bones. This distortion will of course cause misalignment of the temporomandibular joint.

Some patients may be diagnosed with temporomandibular disorder by a dentist or oral surgeon, however the diagnosis of “temporomandibular disorder” is essentially a matter of practicality. I usually explain to patients at the Juzen clinic that any misalignment of the jaw is better understood as just one part of facial distortion.

A number of new patients visit on a daily basis with complaints of severe stiff shoulders and relentless backache with no other apparent physical problems. I usually explain to them that many physical problems such as stiff shoulders and backache are better understood as a general symptom of distortions accumulated within the bone structure (in addition to problems related to the internal organs), and each symptom develops at points where the level of the distortion peaks.

Temporomandibular disorder is not exceptional; it is simply a part of the general symptoms that develop from distortions accumulated from head to toe in the whole body.

In order to treat temporomandibular disorder effectively, the treatment should therefore be directed at the whole body.

More than 350 referrals of temporomandibular disorder and occlusal adjustment have been made to our clinic, and I realized from these clinical experiences that treatment that treats only the teeth has limitations and adverse effects.

The first of the 350 referrals was a patient with reversed occlusion, referred by a dentist. This referral ended with a dramatic result. The patient initially had only four contact points out of twenty-eight permanent teeth. After receiveing one chiropractic therapy session at our clinic, the dentist checked the patient’s occlusion and found out that the number of contact points had jumped up to 14.

Chiropractic therapy performed at our clinic simply provides a correction (adjustment) of subluxation to only one area of the upper cervical vertebrae. This treatment is however enough to activate the natural healing powers of the patient’s body, thus facilitating coordination of bodily functions. This correction of cranial distortions improves temporomandibular disorder.

We use a simple method to check the temporomandibular joint before and after each therapy session. Here are some simple procedures that you can try yourself.

First, put your index and middle fingers on an area near (in front of) the ear canals. This is the temporomandibular joint. Then, move your jaw, still with your fingers on the joint, and check the movements of each side of the joints as you open and close them. Check for timing, distance, and differences in height on the right and left side of the joint as the joint rises. (The movements of the joint in reversed occlusion can be difficult to feel.)

If the lips appear uneven or twisted, the joint movements are often unsymmetrical and may make clicking sounds. These symptoms suggest that it is a serious condition where there is a possibility of a lack of joint fluid. Also, if there is a malposition of the temporomandibular joint, the joint’s resultant unsymmetrical chewing motion can aggravate cranial distortions, starting a vicious circle of distortions within the whole body.

Misalignment of the temporomandibular joint can trigger a negative chain reaction, causing a ripple effect through many parts of the body, thus it is wise to try breaking the circle by confronting the situation as soon as you encounter the problem.

In addition to various problems due to distortions of the body, a vicious circle initiated by misalignment of the temporomandibular joint can also cause irritation of the digestive system. This is a result of the pressure the joint puts on the parotid gland and other salivary glands, making the quality and quantity of salivation inadequate, and thus causing disruption of the mechanisms of digestion and food absorption. Misalignment of the temporomandibular joint may also cause an adverse effect on the skin by decreasing the secretion of parotin, a salivary gland hormone, thus stripping the skin of its moisture.

Misalignment of the temporomandibular joint should be taken seriously as it can affect the essential functions of digestion and absorption that play a fundamental role in all organisms.

Furthermore, the joint’s proximity to the ear means that if there is a malposition of the temporomandibular joint, any illness is likely to be accompanied by tinnitus or dizziness as a result of compression to equilibrium organs, the semicircular canals and the eardrum.

Misalignment of the temporomandibular joint can cause abnormal salivation.
